Last night I my Dad and I went to the NBA Finals, Lakers Celtics game 4. Little did we know that what had started out as a great night, would soon turn into one of the worst sports disasters of all time. The night started out with me getting out of work about 2 hours early so I could get to Staples Center in time for a 6:00PM tip off. I was meeting my Dad in Downtown at the Pico Station Blue Line stop for the game. Since my Dad had never been to an NBA Playoff game before, I figured taking him to an NBA Finals game involving the most legendary Basketball Rivalry of all time would be a great time, providing us with fond memories to last the ages! Boy was I wrong! We got to Staples with about 30 minutes to spare and took a few pics outside with the gigantic trophy, walked around to see the sights, bought some souvenirs, scarfed down some overpriced McDonalds, and made it to our seats right as they dimmed the lights for the national anthem. The crowd was loud as Hell and we were anxious to see the Lakers even up the series at 2 games a piece. The first half started out exactly as we had hoped. Boston couldn't stop anything the Lakers were doing and they opened up a 21 point 1st quarter lead (the biggest 1st quarter lead in NBA Finals history!) They kept it going throughout the 2nd quarter and still had an 18 point lead going into half time. How great! The Lakers are going to win, and in blowout fashion!, or so I thought. Then shit started to go south...QUICK! Instead of running the offense that had been so effective, they shot contested long range jumpers. Instead of slicing and dicing and driving to the rim, they stood around on the perimeter. Instead of playing lock down defense, they gave the Celtics wide open lanes to drive to the basket and wide open looks from beyond the arc. Basically everything that had worked so well for 2 quarters had been abandoned and replaced with the exact opposite style of play! I felt like I was in the Bizzaro World, Staples Center now. Little by little the Celtics chipped away at the lead. The 20 point lead became 13, the 13 point lead became 5, then the Lakers lost the lead with about 3 minutes to go in the ball game, effectively stabbing every Laker (Player and Fan alike) in the building with a knife through the heart and sealing the deal. Well actually they still had a chance, until Sasha got burned by Ray Allen and gave up a wide open layup, which put the final nail in the coffin. The Lakers never recovered and went on to lose in the worst Finals Collapse in NBA History! It was devastating to say the least, and as the crowd walked out into the streets of Downtown Los Angeles like a herd of zombies, everyone looked at each other in disbelief, sick to their stomachs, unable to comprehend what had just happened. Basically it was the worst feeling after a basketball game any of us have ever probably had... But hey, at least me and my Dad were at a historic game! Unfortunately it will go down as a historic game that both of us will want to forget ever happened... I think it's safe to say the Laker's will get destroyed in blowout fashion on Sunday (and I am an eternal optimist)... but hey you never know, maybe after the biggest collapse of all time, the greatest Finals comeback will happen, and the Laker's will miraculously win the Championship. After all, last nights game proved that its never over until its over...
