Good Omens

I just finished reading this book, the first Neil Gaiman book I have ever read (besides his comics) and it was excellent! I hate doing book reports and reviews so just trust me on this one. If you like comedic stories about demons, angels, witches, the antichrist and the end of the world check this book out.

Pasadena Marathon 2010

Today my Fiancee and I ran the Pasadena Half Marathon, and for those of you who don't know, that is 13.1 miles. The weather was freakin' cold this morning and there was a chance of rain so we bundled up to the max and felt great the whole time. Also I reached my goal of finishing the race in under 2 hours, which I was pretty happy about since I didn't train nearly as much as I should have. My "official" time was 2:01:30 but the race's start was such a log jam even after we passed through the gate, at least 5 minutes were wasted before I could really begin to run at my normal pace. My Fiancee beat her previous half marathon time also so she too was really happy. All in all, running the Pasadena Half Marathon was a blast and we will definitely be back next year...

I Am Ozzy

If you're a fan of heavy metal, especially 1980's metal like I am, then this book is an absolute must read. It's called I Am Ozzy, it just came out, and its about... you guessed it... Ozzy Osbourne. It spans from his child hood to the present day and is jam packed with insane music, drug, boozing and tour stories that make you wonder how he was able to have such a prolific music career, and more importantly, how he hasn't dropped dead 1,000 times over by now. My favorite part so far has been the chapters that cover his days in Black Sabbath, and also the stuff on his early solo years up until the death of Randy Rhoades. I'm not quite finished with the book yet, but it's definitely an all time classic in my opinion. So, in honor of plowing through Ozzy's new kick ass autobiography, here's a classic video from the madman himself... Bark At The Moon.

Charlie Murphy's New Book

If you want a quick and entertaining read, then check this book out. Well, assuming that you think Charlie Murphy is funny of course... Clocking in at about 250 pages you can easily take this book out in an evening if you have a coupe of hours to kill. It's basically his life story and how he went from the streets to being a successful stand up comic, without riding the coat-tails of his brother Eddie.

The Pee Wee Herman Show @ Nokia Live

This past sunday instead of watching the Superbowl, my Fiancee and I went and saw the Pee Wee Herman show on the final night of its run in Downtown LA. Now if you're like me and you grew up in the 80s, then you probably were a fan of Pee Wee's Playhouse. If you weren't then you're an idiot and never read my blog again... Anyway, the show was Phenomenal! Pee Wee was in top form, all the characters were included in the performance, classic cartoons were shown, and whenever anyone said the secret word, the audience went absolutely bananas. If you slept on this one you missed out in a major way... Oh yeah... rumor has it that there's another Pee Wee film in the works, and after seeing Pee Wee's Playhouse live I really really hope so.

After 10 years or so of working in the Motion Picture Advertising Industry, I finally left to embark on a new path... I'm not too sure what exactly the future will hold, but I'm going back to school and think things are going to turn out just fine.

Neil Gaiman @ UCLA

Tonight my fiancee and I went to UCLA to see a lecture by the legendary and prolific author Neil Gaiman. However, despite loving his work, neither of us had even read any of his books! I was a fan of the Sandman comics back in the day and we both loved the films Stardust and Coraline, so that was reason enough to go check him out live. Anyway, it was a great night. For the most part he read various selections from his books and did a Q&A session that was pretty entertaining. After the lecture ended, we promptly went out and bought some of the books he read snippets from, which I am looking forward to reading sometime soon. Here is what the LA Times had to say about it...

Author Neil Gaiman read, riffed and answered audience questions at a nearly sold-out venue Thursday night at UCLA's Royce Hall. The crowd -- 1,500 or so people -- was an eclectic mix of tattooed hipsters, students, white-haired readers and other fans.

Gaiman, who has written comic books, novels, children's books, young adult novels and screenplays (and probably something I've left out), was introduced as "the most accomplished storyteller in the English language today." The first thing out of his mouth when the applause died down? An affable, simple "Hello."

"I didn't set out to be a crossover author," Gaiman said. He read from a piece that explained his evolution as a writer. By getting started in comics, he said, he was able to write whatever he wanted: "It's a medium that people mistake for a genre." After he was done with that piece, he told a little story, then read from his Newberry- and Hugo Award-winning young adult novel "The Graveyard Book."

At one point he lost his place, unable to find the next page. There was a pause -- an extended pause. He was really, really lost. He was still lost, and the silence grew more and more awkward. "Talk amongst yourselves!" he suggested, and the room broke into relieved laughter.

Gaiman also read from "Odd and the Frost Giants," which he'd written for World Book Day -- celebrated, he told a chagrined audience, everywhere but America. Then he answered questions that the audience had written on cards.

Gonzo

In case you were wondering, I'm a pretty big Hunter S. Thompson fan and have read many books by him and about him. BUT, for some strange reason I've had this book sitting on my shelf for the last 2 years and never opened it until today. I remember when I got it as a gift from my parents, I had just finished the Ralph Steadman biography on HST, and didn't want to read 2 back to back books on the same topic so I set it aside and that was that. Fortunately for me, everything changed today and I finally gave it a go. Gonzo is basically the life story of HST as told through a ton of insane stories from his friends. Trust me, it makes for one awesome book!
Its Awesome! But You Don't Have To Take My Word For It.
